Franklin STEAM Academy Visit

CABBI Lab Manager Lucienne Burrus (right) explains the experiments going on in the IGB lab to Franklin sixth-graders and chaperones.

Franklin STEAM Academy is a magnet middle school in Champaign, Ill., and is attended by a diverse population of over 600 students. The school emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) curricula, and offers Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes designed to help prepare students for high school and college.

Through a partnership with CABBI and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), more than 270 sixth-graders toured the IGB, including a stop to hear about how CABBI is turning plants into energy, a peek in at our lab space (photo 2), and a demonstration of the iBioFAB automated biofoundry.
